Year 6 Curriculum Overview

Autumn Term

Spring Term

Summer Term

Engish

We will learn how to write a balanced argument, poetry with suspense, a story with suspense and a script for our Film Week.

We will be reading a wide variety of texts on the genres mentioned above, for instance Pig’s Boy Heart, Night Bus Hero and Holes -  just to name a few.

Maths

We will be learning about statistics (problems with pie charts and graphs, averages and interpreting the mean as an average)

We will also be learning about shape and  angles. 

Science

Our first topic will be ‘Evolution and Adaptation.’ We will be learning about DNA, adaptation to the environment and evolution of species.

Our second topic will be ‘Electricity.’ We will be experimenting with voltage, building circuits and making our own projects for Dragons' Den.


Art/D&T

This half term, we will be experimenting with digital photography and different techniques to create photo collage.

For our D&T project, we will be designing and making toys powered by an electric circuit (to be presented in Dragons' Den!)


French

For the Summer Term, in French, our topic is ‘A town in France’. We will learn phrases for travelling.


History/Geography

Why did the Maya civilization decline so quickly?

In Summer 1, we will be learning about the ancient Maya and their civilization. We will be comparing the Ancient Maya civilization with the Anglo-Saxons.

In Summer 2, in our Geography lessons, we will explore how to make our local area more environmentally friendly.


Computing

In our topic ‘Big Data’  we will be exploring how to make a ‘smart’ school or a ‘smart’ classroom.

In our ‘Coding’ topic, we will design an electronic product, learning to code and debug. 


Music

We are learning about how music is used in films and we are composing in preparation for Film Week

RE

We will explore the questions: What is a Triple Refuge in Buddhism? Can a person be a refuge? 

We will also be asking: Is Humanism a religion or a set of beliefs? Can you be an atheist and follow Humanism? 


PSHE

In the Summer Term, in our PSHE sessions, we will be talking about relationships (romantic and friendship) and mental health.


PE

We will be developing our Athletics skills and technique. We will also be playing striking games, including cricket and rounders.
