Summer Term

Engish

We will be writing non-fiction texts and a discussion text where children will learn to write balanced arguments with an introduction and conclusion. Next, we move on to Explanation Texts, where children will learn to clearly describe how something works, for example, the Water Cycle. Later in the term we will have an exciting Poetry Week with a visiting Poet coming in to share their work and get the children fired up with ideas. Following this, we will focus on Action stories, where children will learn to use tools to make their story fast-paced and full of powerful verbs for action.

Maths

We will be focusing on the following areas of maths this term: decimals, money (comparing amounts, solving problems), time (analogue, digital, 24 hour clock) shape (including angles), statistics (interpreting charts and line graphs) and position and direction (including plotting coordinates and translation).

Science

We start with a Sound unit, where children will learn what sound is, and how it is made. We will cover the terms ‘pitch’ and ‘volume’ and learn how sound travels. Then, children will learn how the ear works so that we hear sounds.

In the second half of this term, we will be looking at the 3 ‘states of matter’ (solid, liquid, gas). In this unit, we look at the different structures of each ‘state’. We then look at melting, evaporating and condensing. Lastly, we study which materials can change their state and which are reversible changes.

Art/D&T

This term, we start with our unit, ‘Fabric of Nature’, where a Rainforest theme helps children create patterns and designs for a Batik fabric. PVA glue is used instead of hot wax, then acrylic paints are applied before the glue is washed away to reveal the Batik design. In the second half of the term, children will tackle a DT unit, ‘Torches’ where they will carefully study existing torches and their features. Then, they will design and build a torch of their own, using wires, bulbs, batteries and plastic bottles.

French

This term, we will be exploring French food and music!

History/Geography

Our first unit is exploring Ancient Egypt: What did the Ancient Egyptians believe? Within this unit, we will explore where and when the Ancient Egyptians lived, gods and goddesses, mummification and the building of the pyramids. Our second unit is The Vikings: Were the Vikings raiders, traders or settlers? Within this unit, we will explore who they were and what Viking life was like.

Computing

In Computing, we will be exploring more programming and computational thinking, including decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition and algorithm design. Our second unit is all to do with data handling and investigating the weather.

Music

This term we will be connecting notes and feelings, as well as exploring purpose, identity and expression in music.

RE

This term, we will be focusing on two different religions: Christianity and Sikhism.

PSHE

Our first unit is all about relationships, exploring jealousy, friendships, getting on and falling out, love and memories. Our second unit is changing me, where we will explore dealing with change, managing our emotions and thinking about changes for next year!

PE

In PE, we will be starting off with tennis, followed by netball. Following this, we will be focusing on athletics, ready for our Sports Day, and developing our team work skills in rounders.
