Grasshopper Class Curriculum Overview

Autumn Term

Spring Term

Summer Term

Main Topic: Explorers

Many curriculum areas will be taught through reference to this theme. Much of what is taught in the Grasshoppers is individually targeted. Some children develop their learning through progress across the Engagement Model.  

Communication and Language

We will be supporting the children to develop their skills at their individual level with particular input from their SALT  where appropriate. Vocabulary focus: Explorer topic and Royalty.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be supporting the children to develop their skills at their individual level. Focus: saying sorry.

Physical Development

We will be supporting the children to develop their gross and fine motor skills through daily, varied activities. Focus: building independence with dressing and changing. 


Literacy

Reading and writing will be developed individually at a child’s own level as appropriate. Texts: Rosie’s Walk, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Lights (non-fiction), Whatever Next!


Maths

Number skills are developed at the child’s own level. Number focus: Number patterns in the teens and combining groups (addition). SSM focus: Measure and capacity. 


Understanding the World

What is an explorer? What do I need as an explorer? Where do explorers go? How do explorers travel? Signs of Summer.


Expressive Arts and Design

Focus: Cutting skills and collage. Music: Fast and slow.

RE

Why is the word ‘God’ so important to Christians? Recognising and valuing our own names.


Engagement Model

The five areas of engagement are:
