Curriculum Overview

Introduction

At Gorseland Primary School we are proud of our vibrant curriculum. It is designed to inspire and engage our pupils, equipping them with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be respectful, responsible members of society, both now and in the future.

We enable all our pupils to make links, joins and connections whilst developing curiosity and a passion for learning throughout their time at Gorseland. Our curriculum focuses on the building of knowledge and skills over time as set out in the National Curriculum in a coherent and progressive way. At Gorseland, we are ambitious about what pupils can achieve - knowing, remembering and, ultimately, learning more.

Our aim is to enable our pupils to end their journey with us as hard working, resilient and considerate individuals who feel proud of their achievements, having successfully acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes to prepare them for their next steps.

Curriculum Drivers

We ensure children receive a broad and balanced curriculum with three curriculum ‘drivers’ at the heart of all learning. They have been formed through our school values, our beliefs about high quality education and an exploration of the backgrounds and experiences of our children.

This means understanding and celebrating individual differences.

This means we educate children to have a better understanding that each individual is unique, also recognising and celebrating our individual differences. The differences can be in health, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs or other ideologies. This shapes our children’s thinking as we prepare them to be interdependent citizens that contribute positively to British society.

This means embedding culture and creativity across our learning.

This means embedding the arts, culture and creativity across our learning to create a broad and ambitious curriculum, strengthen pupil voice and support personal as well as educational progression. We aim to ensure every young person can be innovative and access a diverse, high quality, cultural education.

This means exploring issues and taking action to improve the environment.

This is a process that encourages children to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving and take action to improve their environment. As a result, children develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and develop the skills to make informed and responsible decisions.
